High Five Hope
Bringing Hope Through Hoops
There are basketball hoops around the world. In cities and in small villages, in deserts and in mountain jungles – basketball courts require little more than a backboard and a hoop. Nets, posts, hardtop, painted lines are all optional. Basketball courts come in half or full sizes, backboards can be square, oval, round, or most any other geometric shape and made of plastic, metal, wood, or anything that can serve a bank shot. A hoop and a ball are all that you need for a game.Around the world children play basketball in rain or shine. For many of these children, the court and the game are more than just sport, in some cases it’s an escape, a reprieve, a way to forget the problems and strife in their daily lives. There’s something magic about basketball and how it can bring both joy of sport and teamwork while also lifting the individual spirit.
High Five Hope is an effort to help more children experience greater self esteem, confidence, pride, leadership, teamwork and most importantly, happiness and hope through the power of sports. Every child deserves the opportunity to develop, to smile, and to have greater hope. High Five Hope works with street children in the Philippines, specifically those with the greatest needs. It is estimated there are 85,000 street children in Metro Manila alone. High Five Hope uses multi-month basketball and volleyball programs to help both boys and girls living on the street from across Metro Manila.
Last year we had over 300 street children in the High Five Hope program. Our goal is to double the number of children we can reach each year.
Watch the video below to learn about the impact High Five Hope is having with children living on the street in the Philippines. It is a short 10 minute video that explains what High Five Hope is trying to achieve.
